Carpet Stretching in Ottawa

Carpet stretching in Ottawa removes wrinkles, ripples and buckles from wall-to-wall carpet by releasing it from the tack strip, power stretching it tight and re-hooking it — then trimming the excess. The Carpet and Rug Institute says proper restretching with a power stretcher should correct wrinkles. GCO first checks why the carpet loosened, because a failed underpad or delaminated backing will not be fixed by stretching alone.

Why carpet wrinkles

Most carpet wrinkles trace back to how it was installed. The CRI notes that buckles, wrinkles and bubbles normally do not occur with properly stretched-in carpet. Other contributors push a borderline installation over the edge.

  • Carpet that was knee-kicked rather than power stretched
  • An underpad that is too soft or too thick for the carpet
  • Heavy furniture dragged across the carpet
  • High humidity periods in summer
  • Tack strip that has lost its grip or was damaged
  • Delamination, where the backing separates from the face of the carpet

Why ripples are worth fixing

A ripple is not only cosmetic. Loose carpet wears faster where it folds and is walked on, seams can split under the extra stress, and raised wrinkles can be a tripping hazard on stairs, in halls and for anyone using a walker or cane.

Power stretcher or knee kicker?

A knee kicker is a short tool used to position carpet and hook it onto the tack strip at the edges. The CRI’s residential standard describes it as a positioning tool, not a stretching tool, and requires a power stretcher for stretch-in installation. A power stretcher braces against the opposite wall with extension poles and applies even tension across the room; how much stretch is needed depends on the carpet’s backing and its manufacturer’s instructions.

This is why home restretching with a knee kicker alone often brings the wrinkles back.

How restretching works

Furniture is moved out of the area — or shifted to one side and then the other. The carpet is released from the tack strip along the walls being stretched, power stretched until it is taut, hooked back onto the strip, and the excess is trimmed and tucked. Seams and transitions are checked and repaired where needed, and damaged tack strip is replaced.

When restretching is not enough

Restretching works when the carpet and pad are sound. It does not solve problems inside the materials themselves, and an honest assessment should say so before work starts.

Restretching or replacement?

Seams, stairs and transitions

Restretching often reveals loose seams or frayed edges at transitions, which can be re-seamed or fitted with new transition strips. Stair carpet that has loosened is refastened step by step. Patching a burned or stained area with a remnant is sometimes possible, especially where offcuts from the original installation were kept.

What shapes restretching cost

Restretching is usually priced by the rooms and conditions involved.

  • Number of rooms and their sizes
  • Furniture that has to be moved
  • Tack strip and seam repairs
  • Stairs and transitions
  • Underpad replacement, if needed

Common questions

Stretch-in carpet should be power stretched with a stretcher braced across the room, following the carpet maker’s stretch instructions, then re-hooked on the tack strip and trimmed. A knee kicker alone does not produce adequate stretch.

Most sound carpet can. Delaminated backing, failed underpad, water damage or mould need different solutions.

Properly power-stretched carpet on a suitable pad normally stays flat. Wrinkles that return may point to the pad or the carpet backing.

A single room is often a short job; multiple rooms, stairs and repairs take longer. Furniture moving is usually the biggest variable.

Large items need to be moved or shifted so the carpet can be stretched wall to wall. This is planned before the visit.

If the carpet is otherwise in good condition, yes. If it is worn out or the pad has failed, replacement may be better value.
